Diet and Nutrition
I used to be angry at the way my family scrutinized my weight because it made me feel different, like there was something wrong with me. I was raised on "old school" southern cooking, so I didn't know anything about proper diet and nutrition, and neither did anyone in my family. This set in motion a lifelong cycle of yo-yo dieting and poor eating habits.
What’s ironic is that I really wasn’t fat; I was what most would call “healthy” or
“thick.” But compared to the rest of my family who were all tall and skinny, I was “FAT.”
The one good thing that came out of my child-hood trauma was my constant desire to make my
body better. And the more I learned about my body, the more I loved to appreciate it.
If you were expecting an article about a quick fix, then you came to the wrong place. Speaking from my own experience, I can tell you that crash dieting and quick weight-loss gimmicks don’t work, and are the worst way to lose weight.
Today, I am in the best shape of my life, but it didn’t come easy. After decades of fad dieting
and experimenting with dangerous eating disorders like anorexia
and bulimia, I finally realized
that a balanced diet and exercise were really the only way to go. I now have a body that I am truly proud of.
For optimum health and a long life, you have to make fitness, along with proper diet and nutrition, a part of your everyday life.
My weight still fluctuates from time to time, but I try not to let it spin out of control.
I
now realize that managing my weight will take a lifelong commitment, but it is one that I am willing
to make.
