Haircare Tips for Older Women
The Mane Event
Our hair is our crowning glory. It’s the first thing people notice, so it’s
important that it
always looks fabulous. Whether it’s long, short, fried, dyed and laid to the side, we divas
need to
know how to keep our glorious mane healthy and beautiful—even if it isn’t ours.
Here are some tips to managing your hair as it gets
older
Shampoo
Use a gentle moisturizing cleanser when shampooing your locks,
preferably one without sulfates (which are not only harsh on your hair, but the environment
as well). Hair becomes less pliable as we age, this can be remedied by less frequent
shampoos.
However, if you are active like I am, you need to shampoo or at least no-poo
(shampooing with a moisturizing conditioner) daily to clear the scalp of perspiration and
build up.
Conditioner
A must have for hair of any age. Proper conditioning provides your hair with the extra
moisture needed
to protect it from daily styling and damage. To defend against the loss of elasticity that
occurs when
we get older, consider a deep conditioning treatment once a week, and a once-a-month protein
pack
conditioner.
Scalp Care
A light scalp massage before bed not only relaxes you, it also helps
stimulate
hair growth. It also loosens build up and oil on the scalp, allowing hair to grow healthier
and shinier.
Chemical Treatments
Used mainly for two purposes, either to straighten hair
(relaxer)
or to create a curl or wave pattern (permanent). Both use fairly harsh chemicals that are
applied
directly to the hair to achieve the desired result. I opted out of using chemicals on my
hair for this
very reason.
I strongly suggest that you consult a professional when considering a
chemical process because improper use can cause severe hair and scalp damage.
Color
Any chemical treatment applied to the hair will cause damage,
including hair color.
Always keep your hair well conditioned and maintained if you have colored or are considering
coloring
your hair.
Style
Is it getting harder and harder to hold your look together?
Hair loses some of its elasticity as we get older. Monthly protein treatments can help keep
your hair
healthy and strong. Allowing it to hold and maintain any style that your little diva heart
desires.
Keeping it "fly" just gets better and better.
