Hairstyles for Older Women
The Long and Short of It

Older Women Short Cuts As Divas our hair is usually as big as our personalities. So why is it that once we get older, longer hair is no longer chic? I have met so many women in their 40s, 50s and even 30s who are opting to chop their luscious locks for easier to maintain shorter crops.

I believe that there are several answers to this mane enigma. One is convenience, the other may be that shorter hairstyles tend to be more flattering on older women.

In my case I just got tired of spending all my time and money sitting in a beauty salon for hours on end. I also got sick of the damage that I was inflicting on my helpless follicles with all the chemical treatments, heat styling and weaves.

A short style for an older woman doesn’t have to be drab or boring. We divas have been working short cuts for years. However we must keep the effects of time in mind when working a short crop. We want the look to enhance not detract. Extreme spikes, parts and edges may have been cool in your 20s and even your 30s, but after 40 they can be a bit much.

Consider softer styles that are easy to manage and epitomize your personal style. Short hairstyles that lightly frame the face and accentuate your best features are always top picks for older women.

Wash-n-wear looks are versatile and easy, just a dab of styling gel or moisturizer and some finger combing does the trick. Wrap styles are also great and easy to maintain. Just brush and finger comb with a little styling product and go.

Long Hairstyle Older Women Longer hairstyles have always reflected elegance and style. Longer hair is also more versatile than shorter hair because you have more styling options. However, the most dated style is definitely long, straight hair parted down the middle. Even the quintessential diva, Cher, ditched this look years ago.

If you love your long locks, I would suggest off-center parts and lovely, upswept dos. I love chignons and you can’t go wrong with the classic flip. This style looks great in short, long and medium lengths.

Whatever style you prefer, short or long, remember to always avoid trendy hairstyles and looks that don’t fit your hair type. If you see a younger style that appeals to you, take the picture to your stylist and ask if they can create a similar style, utilizing the elements that work best for you. This will help keep your look updated without compromising sophistication.

True divas don’t let age and convenience limit their sense of style. We can look fabulous in any hairstyle. The important thing is to keep it healthy and looking fierce.
